How to bet on football: a beginner's guide to odds and stakes
Learn how decimal odds, stakes, singles and accumulators work, calculate a simple football betslip, and set limits before you start.

If you searched how to bet soccer on Betway, the basic mechanics are not unique to one brand: choose a football market, add one selection to a betslip, enter a stake, and review both your maximum possible loss and displayed potential return before confirming. The exact screen, available markets and settlement rules can differ by operator and location.
This is a guide to the arithmetic and the decisions on a slip—not a method for making money. Only use a licensed operator that is legally available where you are, and only if you are 18 or older and can afford to lose the full stake.
Start with four words: market, odds, stake, settlement
Before placing a first slip, identify four separate things.
- Market: the question being settled, such as home win, over 2.5 goals or both teams to score.
- Odds: the operator's current price for one possible answer.
- Stake: the amount you put at risk.
- Settlement: the rule used to grade the selection after the event.
The match alone is not enough. “Home team” in the 1X2 market is different from “draw no bet”, and a standard football market may cover regulation time plus stoppage time rather than extra time. Read the market label and the operator's rules before confirming.
How to read decimal odds
Decimal odds are common in South Africa, Nigeria and many online interfaces. They include the returned stake in the displayed total.
Use two basic calculations:
potential total return = stake × decimal odds
net change if correct = potential total return − stake
For a 10-unit stake at 1.80:
- potential total return:
10 × 1.80 = 18units; - net change if correct:
18 − 10 = +8units; - loss if incorrect:
−10units.
The return is potential because the selection still has to settle, and voids, dead heats or other special rules can change settlement.
Convert odds into implied probability
The simplest price-to-probability conversion is:
implied probability = 1 ÷ decimal odds
At 1.80, the raw implied probability is 1 ÷ 1.80 = 0.5556, or 55.56%. This does not mean the outcome has been independently forecast at 55.56%. It is the probability implied by that price before considering the operator's margin.
Lower decimal odds imply a higher probability; higher odds imply a lower probability and a larger potential return per unit. Neither tells you whether the price is accurate.

Figure 1. Illustrative arithmetic, not a current operator quote or a recommended selection. “Units” avoid implying any specific currency or stake size.
Single, accumulator and bookmaker margin
These terms answer different questions about the same slip.
A single has one selection
A single depends on one market outcome. If you select a home win at 1.80 and stake 10 units, the calculation above applies. One selection makes the exposure and settlement easier to audit, which is useful when learning how a betslip works.
An accumulator combines selections
An accumulator, also called an acca or parlay, combines two or more selections. The decimal odds are multiplied, and every active leg normally has to settle as correct for the accumulator to return. Treatment of a void leg depends on the operator's rules.
For two legs at 1.50 and 1.80:
combined odds = 1.50 × 1.80 = 2.70
A 10-unit stake therefore displays a 27-unit potential total return and a +17-unit net change if both legs settle as correct. If either active leg loses, the accumulator will normally lose. The larger combined price comes with more ways for the slip to fail; it is not evidence of a better forecast.
Margin makes the market add up to more than 100%
In a three-way football market, convert all three decimal prices into raw implied probabilities and add them. Consider an illustrative 1X2 market priced at 2.10, 3.40 and 3.60:
| Outcome | Decimal odds | Raw implied probability |
|---|---|---|
| Home | 2.10 | 47.62% |
| Draw | 3.40 | 29.41% |
| Away | 3.60 | 27.78% |
| Total | 104.81% |
The amount above 100%—about 4.81 percentage points here—is the market overround. It is a simple view of margin, not a separate fee debited from the account and not proof that any one price is inaccurate. Normalising the three numbers to 100% gives roughly 45.43%, 28.06% and 26.50%, but that still represents the market's view rather than an objective forecast.
A simple first football slip, step by step
The safest way to learn the interface is to keep the example small and auditable.
- Set the loss limit first. Choose an amount that is separate from rent, food, transport, debt payments and savings. Never borrow for a stake.
- Choose one match and one market. A single is easier to understand than a long accumulator.
- Read the settlement scope. Check whether the market covers 90 minutes plus stoppage time, extra time, or another stated period.
- Read the decimal odds. Convert them to raw implied probability with
1 ÷ oddsif you want to understand the price. - Add the selection to the betslip. Confirm that the team, market and selection are the ones you intended.
- Enter the stake. Treat the entire stake as the maximum possible loss.
- Check the displayed return. Recalculate
stake × oddsand look for odds changes or special conditions. - Pause before confirming. If the amount breaks your limit or the rule is unclear, do not submit the slip.
- Keep the record. Save the original selection, price, time and settled result. Do not judge a process from one outcome.
The official Betway South Africa guide checked on 30 October 2026 describes the same broad flow: choose a sport and fixture, select a market, add the selection to the betslip, enter the bet details and review before submission.[1] That is an example of a current interface, not an endorsement, and the layout can change. Hollywoodbets, SportyBet and other operators may organise the same mechanics differently.
Odds can move before you confirm
Prices change when new information arrives, trading limits are reached or the operator updates the market. A live price may also be suspended while an important event is checked. If the odds shown on the confirmation screen differ from the number you calculated, stop and decide again; do not assume the earlier potential return still applies.
Also distinguish these three values:
- Model probability: an estimate produced from match information and a defined method.
- Market price: an operator's current decimal odds at a stated time.
- ProofPitch calculated card price: a market-based reference produced with the documented 5% margin rule.
The calculated card price is not an operator quote. A model probability and a market-implied probability can disagree, but that disagreement does not prove which one is right.
How ProofPitch helps you read a match
ProofPitch is designed to show a forecast as a probability, timestamp and auditable record rather than a command to place a bet. A useful card should identify the fixture, market, model probability, calculation time and relevant price labels.
When evaluating the record, keep two datasets separate:
- live statistics show what was published before real events and how those forecasts later settled;
- retrospective checks apply a fixed method to a defined historical sample.
Combining the two can hide selection bias or data leakage. Compare the live forecast record with the retrospective checks, and read why a probability is different from a tip before treating a price as a decision.
How to stop betting when it no longer feels controlled
If gambling is taking money needed for essentials, causing secrecy or anxiety, or making you chase earlier losses, stop rather than trying to repair the situation with another slip.
Practical first steps are to leave the betting session, activate self-exclusion, remove betting apps and saved payment methods, ask the operator to close or restrict the account, and tell a trusted person. Do not wait for a final bet.

Frequently asked questions
How do I bet on soccer on Betway?
On the official South African guide reviewed for this article, the general flow is to choose soccer, open a fixture and market, tap a selection to add it to the betslip, enter the stake and review before submitting. The exact interface and legal availability depend on country and can change, so use the current official guide and local rules. This article is not an operator recommendation.
How do I calculate betting odds?
For decimal odds, multiply the stake by the odds to get the potential total return. Divide one by the odds to get raw implied probability. At 2.50, a 10-unit stake displays a 25-unit total return, while 1 ÷ 2.50 = 40% raw implied probability.
What is the difference between a single and an accumulator?
A single contains one selection. An accumulator multiplies the odds of several selections, but every active leg normally has to settle as correct. The higher combined price does not remove risk; it adds dependencies to the slip.
Can football betting be a reliable way to make money?
No dependable method removes uncertainty, market margin or loss risk. Treating betting as income can encourage larger stakes and loss chasing. If financial return is the reason to participate, the safer decision is not to bet.
How much should a beginner stake?
There is no universally safe amount. Set a small entertainment budget in advance and assume the full stake can be lost. Do not use essential money, borrowed money or an amount chosen to recover a previous loss.
What should I do if the odds change on the betslip?
Recalculate the potential return and reconsider the selection at the new price. Do not confirm automatically. Operators can also offer settings for accepting or rejecting price changes; check the current platform controls.
How do I stop betting?
Stop the session, activate self-exclusion, remove access and payment shortcuts, contact the operator, and use a local support service. South African and Nigerian contacts are listed above. If you are in Lagos State, SafePlay also provides a cross-platform exclusion route for covered licensed operators.
Understand the slip before you decide
A football betslip is simple arithmetic wrapped around an uncertain event. Read the market, convert the odds, cap the stake, understand settlement and be prepared to lose the full amount. One correct result does not validate a method, and one attractive return does not create a reliable income path.
Open ProofPitch to inspect probabilities, timestamps and the public record before comparing a forecast with a market price.
18+ only; use only where legal. Gambling involves a risk of loss. Set time and money limits, never chase losses, and do not treat predictions as income, employment or financial advice. If gambling is causing harm, stop and contact an appropriate local support service.
