This target profit calculator works out the stake needed at decimal odds to reach a chosen net profit if the bet wins, with the total return and the probability implied by the odds.
Target profit calculator
Works out the stake needed at decimal odds to reach a chosen net profit if the bet wins.
If the bet loses, the stake is lost. A high profit target needs a high stake; the calculation does not measure risk.
How it works
Enter the decimal odds and the net profit you want. The stake needed is the desired profit divided by D − 1. That stake is what you lose if the bet does not win: a high profit target needs a high stake.
Formulas
- Stake = desired profit / (
D− 1). - Total return = stake ×
D. - Implied probability of the odds:
1 / D.
Worked example
For a net profit of 100 at odds 2.50: stake 66.67, total return 166.67. The probability implied by the odds is 40.00%.
Things to keep in mind
- If the bet loses, the whole stake is lost, and here it can be larger than the profit you wanted.
- Chasing a fixed profit adds pressure to stake more; set a limit before you bet.
- The calculation does not measure the real probability or recommend betting.
Next steps
- If the profit target is reached by chaining several selections, the combined odds change the stake you need.
- Compare the resulting stake with what share of the bankroll it is.
- A profit target says nothing about probability; for that, see probability and expected value.
- Once the bet is placed, you can fix the result with a hedge.
Frequently asked questions
How do I work out how much to stake to win a set amount?
Divide the profit you want by the decimal odds minus 1.
What happens at low odds?
At low odds the stake needed is much larger than the profit you want.
Does the return include the original stake?
Yes: total return is stake × odds; net profit subtracts the stake.
Does it work with American odds?
